What will you learn?

With the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) Roaming and 5G roaming it has started to become clear that TAP is not a suitable mechanism for wholesale charging in this new all IP world with a plethora of devices with different profiles and usage behaviours. As such over the last few years GSMA has been working on a new wholesale billing standard. GSMA has announced that TAP will not be developed any further and envision that with time all wholesale billing will move to BCE.

The BCE course starts with providing the context and need for BCE evolution, and then goes on to build on:

  • What BCE is.
  • How it can be used and deployed.
  • What are the pros and cons of using BCE.
  • What are the various use cases that will see the use of BCE.
  • The structure and how it’s different from TAP.
  • High level technical details.

The purpose of this module is to provide a fundamental understanding of why BCE was developed and what it is. Clearly demonstrating how it’s different from TAP and what features it brings along that TAP can’t support.

We will also go on to look at the high-level process flow and structure of BCE.

Starting with an overview of wholesale billing and current challenges with it and why this necessitated development of a new standard for wholesale billing, we further delve into details of what BCE is and how it is going to completely change wholesale billing.

Students will learn why and when to start working on BCE and how exactly it is different from TAP. We will go through various use cases that clearly demonstrate how BCE should and will be used.

DHIRAJ WAZIR
LECTURER
Dhiraj is the CEO of ROCCO Strategy and one of the few subject matter experts in the Telecommunications field of Roaming & Interconnect. Dhiraj has spent over 20 years working on Roaming Wholesale, Product Management and Retail Propositions. Dhiraj has had a broad remit, building his telecom career with the Hutchison group, T-Mobile, EE and BT before joining ROCCO.

Helena Bertovic

Helena has 20+ years of experience within the telco industry and is specialised in roaming clearing services. She started her roaming journey working for a telco operator in Croatia and pursued it in a financial clearing house in the UK, where she stayed for almost ten years before moving to Switzerland to join Comfone AG. She actively participated in GSMA IDS working groups for several years, contributing to defining industry standards in clearing services.

Ruben Iversen

Ruben is one of the pioneers within the roaming industry with an extensive background in Tele and IT technologies. He has been actively involved in developing some of the standards within mobile roaming and has been an early influencer in optimizing the use of discount wholesale agreements. Ruben is also involved in important technology developments such as blockchain, mobile payments, network security and law enforcement. Previously, Ruben was CEO of NeuString – a pioneer in the use of analytics software in the roaming industry since 2007 up until 2017 where he led NeuString to a successful acquisition. Prior to that, Ruben had been working for Data Clearing houses such as MACH and Dan Net and participated in various working groups within GSMA.

Henning Lagerbielke

Henning has worked in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years.

Since Henning started working in the telecommunications space, he has been travelling around the world working with customers ranging from networking engineers to C-level. His experience involves, among others, growing a company from nothing to exit, building teams, dual go-to-market models with both direct sales and indirect partner sales together with well developed knowledge and proven execution of product management. He has successfully driven product transformations from on-premise to cloud and SaaS.

Randall Peterson

Randy Peterson has been in the Roaming Industry for over 15 years.  In that time he has been the Chair of many GSMA subgroups including the WAS IDS North America as well as the IDS group.  He has worked for Union Wireless, as the Roaming and Software Standards Architect, for 17 years. After that, he joined the Comfone team.  He has been an integral part in helping and developing the BCE standards.

Anna Gussmann

Anna has more than 25 years of experience in the mobile industry. She is an active participant in GSMA work, initially in TAP and now also in Billing and Charging Evolution (BCE). Anna is the BCE Subgroup Chair since 2018.

She is actively promoting the BCE standard to mobile operators with two training sessions recorded for GSMA, Syniverse educational video, Presentations and panel discussions at WAS#15, WAS#16 and now also WAS#17 and diverse interviews with different companies in the industry.
