Project Description

VOLTE ROAMING

ADVANCED LEVEL – 3.4. Roaming Programme

What will you learn?

With the decommissioning of 2G/3G networks underway globally, VoLTE Roaming has become critical and one of the top priorities of most MNOs. It’s clearly the next major project in Roaming delivery for Mobile Operators.

Combined with ROCCO’s research with MNOs, this training course includes topics such as:

  • VoLTE Architecture
  • Emergency calling
  • Lawful Intercept
  • Commercial modelling
  • Shortcode dialling
  • Service testing
  • LBO & S8HR
  • IMS

The purpose of this module is to provide an overall understanding of what 4G Roaming is and how it works. Dhiraj Wazir explains the basics of 4G, its history, and its main characteristics.

  • 4G technology, why is it important?
  • Importance of 4G networks?
  • 4G vs 2G/3G
  • Global status of 4G Roaming.

In this module, we look at what the LTE network looks like, what are the various elements and how they differ from those we’ve seen in 2G/3G.

  • 4G Network elements
  • Network interfaces in 4G
  • Introduction to Diameter
  • CSFB
  • QoS for LTE Roaming

Building on the fundamentals of the previous modules, we introduce VoLTE Roaming, its importance and its history.

  • Importance of VoLTE Roaming
  • Status and forecasts
  • Impact of decommissioning
  • Business case behind VoLTE Roaming

In this module, we look at the network elements involved in enabling VoLTE and VoLTE Roaming. We introduce IMS and how it functions.

  • IMS network
  • Network elements
  • Comparison with legacy voice networks.

In this network we look at the various elements required for a roaming launch. We take a deeper look at testing involved and what challenges operators may face.

  • IREG
  • TADIG
  • Solutions
  • Third party solutions

VoLTE roaming fundamentally changes the way voices works and the way operators must charge for it. In this module we look at the fundamental shift in the cost structure, and the potential commercial impact. We look at the various options for charging and their impacts and also what the market trend is.

  • Cost structure
  • Charging options
  • Market trends

In this module, we look at what the various challenges with VoLTE Roaming. These include emergency calling, lawful intercept, handset issues, short code dialling and fraud aspects.

In this module, we look at some real-life cases of MNO’s experiences of launching VoLTE Roaming. What were the challenges they faced and how they resolved these challenges.

Who is this course for?

  • Wholesale Roaming Managers and coordinators new to 4G and VoLTE Roaming, or that have some basic understanding and need to get a better view to help them prepare for their roll-out.
  • Operatives in Vendors interested to know the background for VoLTE Roaming from the perspective of Wholesale Roaming Managers and coordinators.
  • Anyone with a strong interest in VoLTE Roaming who wants to understand the processes and considerations behind the delivery of VoLTE Roaming.

Why choose this course?

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE and is basically the technology that enables voice to travel over a 4G network. Under legacy networks (2G/3G), voice was still circuit-switched and relatively well understood. On a 4G network voice is also Packet Switched making it no different for other Data connections, but this in turn makes Roaming extremely complicated.

Starting with an overview of 4G, which gives a solid foundation for the rest of the course, we go through all the aspects of 4G which make it different from 2G and 3G delivery.

Students will learn why VoLTE is unique and how to handle the challenges and opportunities it presents. Moreover, this course also explains how to be better prepared for the challenges that VoLTE Roaming launches will bring.

By the end of the course, students will know:

  • The differences between 4G and legacy technologies.
  • What’s unique about VoLTE
  • How to set up their Roaming operations to equip themselves for VoLTE Roaming
  • Commercial impacts that VoLTE Roaming will bring.
  • What are the expected challenges in a VoLTE Roaming launch.
